Stretch marks develop in most women during and even after pregnancy. These appearances are streak-looking, a bit elevated from the surface of the skin. Colors may vary from lighter for dark-skinned women and pinkish for light-skinned women, from the original skin. These marks are actually tears forming in the tissue right below the skin representing the collagen from the underneath the skin where the tearing occurs. Women having it find it neither harmful nor painful and will usually fade but after a long period of time. These are commonly seen or found in the abdomen of most women, where the skin is heavily stretched as the tummy gets bigger because of pregnancy. But it is not surprising if these marks also appear in the buttocks, hips, breasts and thighs. There are several periods in the life of a woman when these appear since some of them may experience the appearance of the marks as soon as their tummies start getting big while others develop these during the last trimester of pregnancy. Women who are prone to stretch marks will be able to avoid its onset by using lotions and creams applied on areas where it will possibly appear, the tummy being the most probable place, as is the one that gets too big during pregnancy. Available products in the market today can reduce the itching and help to minimize scratching the belly to reduce the appearance of the marks. Such creams as cocoa butter are also used, besides, rubbing these into the skin provides a light and gentle massage.Women often wonder why they develop these unwanted appearances in their skin. They are unaware that these are hereditary. This is dependent on the genetic make-up since women whose mothers have the appearances when they were pregnant have the greater tendency to develop these during their pregnancy. If women have elastic skin, most probably this was a trait which came from their mother. The elasticity of the skin therefore depends on genetic make-up. The more elastic is the skin, the more prone one becomes to stretch marks. Weight gain is another factor attributed to the onset of these marks because the more women gain weight during pregnancy, the more they are likely to develop stretch marks. When there are rapid fluctuations of weight gain and loss, the skin that is being stretched during that period will often result to stretch marks. In order to minimize the onset of stretch marks, one has to maintain the desirable body weight considering the normal weight gain of the mother and the her baby during this period. Gaining more weight than what is desirable can cause you to develop those unwanted and undesirable stretch marks during pregnancy.
